Location Spotlight: Salisbury, UK
Salisbury is a modern and bustling English town with a medieval city at its heart. Walking through its streets you will see the craftsmanship of ages past in the buildings all around you, well preserved, and adding an air of timelessness. The most famous is Salisbury Cathedral, its spire, the tallest in the country and a feat of medieval engineering, rises to a breath-taking 123 m (404ft.). A true marvel of the medieval world, the Cathedral has endured since the first stone was laid way back in 1220. With a majestic and calming atmosphere, it’s a must on any visit.
For those seeking older roots, then perhaps a visit to nearby Stonehenge is in order. The best-known prehistoric monument in Europe, Stone Henge endures as a source of inspiration and fascination, and a place of worship and celebration.
When the sun is shining and there are no clouds to be seen, you could mistake yourself for being on a vineyard in the Mediterranean.
Bringing things back down to more modern concerns in town, maybe a spot of shopping is more your thing? Apart from the numerous fine independent shops that line the streets of Salisbury, there is a notable Farmers Market that takes place within the Charter Market twice a week. Still can’t get enough of the old stuff? You’ll love the Antiques Market, maybe you’ll find a bargain or two.
For the wine connoisseurs among us how about a visit to Bluestone’s Vineyards? The vineyard is truly beautiful and on our good days in England, when the sun is shining and there are no clouds to be seen, you could mistake yourself for being on a vineyard in the Mediterranean. English wine has come on leaps and bounds in recent years, and the terroir is indeed very favourable, sharing geological characteristics with better known wine regions just across the Channel. Tastings can of course be arranged, and we’d say it would be rude not to.
